Three days later, Elle was seriously starting to miss the sun. Even while stuck in her attic back home, she’d been able to enjoy the bright rays filtering in through her dusty little window. Well, ‘enjoy’ probably wasn’t the right word. Hanging out in Azriel and Alissa’s beautiful family home was certainly more enjoyable, though she felt a little as if she existed in a state of limbo. It was frustrating not knowing what was going on with Dex, or if Sienna was okay, or whether Vale City had been overrun by magical vampires. “It’ll be a while before that happens,” Azriel assured her multiple times, but she still hated feeling so detached from the real world.

She looked up from the book she’d been trying to focus on as Alissa walked into the lounge and dropped onto the couch beside her. “Finished work?” Elle asked.

“Yes,” Alissa answered with a sigh. “It’s Friday, and it’s wine o’clock. I’m done for the week.” Though Alissa’s family had plenty of wealth—her parents were currently traveling overseas and hadn’t been home for almost a year—and Alissa had amassed her own small fortune from the various occupations her long life had allowed her to try out, she apparently liked to keep herself busy. Currently, she worked as a freelance graphic designer, which meant it had been easy enough for her to leave her fancy Cavalli Avenue apartment for a few days and work from her parents’ home so Elle wasn’t left alone with a grumpy Azriel.

“I’ve always wanted to know,” Elle said, “if vampires actually enjoy the taste of things other than blood, or whether you consume normal food and drink in public just because it’s more socially acceptable.”

“Oh, wine is still quite delicious,” Alissa said, leaning her elbow on the back of the couch and twirling a strand of hair around her finger. “As are plenty of other foods. They just don’t provide any sustenance for us the way they do for other races. Blood is the only thing that’s necessary for us to consume.” She turned her head toward the flickering orange flames lined up in the gas fireplace and asked, “Were you feeling cold?”

“No. I just like the ambience. It makes things feel a little less … gray.” Elle glanced out of the bay windows, where the sky was the exact same color it had been day and night since she first woke up here.

“It’s hard for humans, I know,” Alissa said. “You’ll start to get depressed if you spend too much longer here.”

Elle turned to face her again. “How did you …” But her words trailed off. She hadn’t yet been able to bring herself to ask Alissa anything personal, like exactly how old she was, whether she’d ever been married, and how she ended up a vampire. Vampires weren’t born, only made, and since it seemed all her immediate family members were vampires, Elle wondered if they’d all been turned at the same time, either voluntarily or against their will—which was illegal.
